Bardis|This seems to be the best commentary available on Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit. The author not only has a good understanding of the book from beginning to end; he also expresses himself in a clear, understandable, and interesting way.
Prior to 2007, when this book came out, the best commentary was most likely Hyppolite's
Peter Kalkavage's The Logic of Desire guides the reader through Hegel's great work. Given the book's legendary difficulty, one may well ask, "Why even try to read the Phenomenology?" In his preface, Kalkavage explains why he thinks a reader should try:
